Andreessen Horowitz (a16z)’s latest report on consumer artificial intelligence shows that the market landscape is changing significantly. The report tracks the top 100 consumer-grade AI applications, ranking via Similarweb's network access data and Sensor Tower's mobile application data, updated every two years. The latest rankings show that since August 2024, 17 new companies have ranked among the top 50, marking a major change in the market structure.

The report pointed out that OpenAI's ChatGPT showed strong growth momentum, doubling its user base through its advanced voice mode and the first inference model o1. As of February 2025, the number of active users reached 400 million per week, twice the number six months ago. Currently, mobile applications account for nearly half of ChatGPT's users.

Artificial intelligence video generation has become a new growth category, with three new companies – China’s Conch Technology and Kling AI, and OpenAI’s recently launched Sora in Europe – all of which have entered the top 50.

In addition, the report also highlights the growing interest in artificial intelligence tools among developers and users known as “vibecoders” (those who want to use AI to create without traditional programming skills). Development environments that directly integrate language models (such as Cursor) and text-to-network platforms (such as Bolt) have both shown explosive growth. Technical users can even use the two together, first creating the initial prototype in Bolt, and then code-refining in Cursor.

From a revenue perspective, image and video editing tools contribute 20% of consumer AI revenue, leading all other categories. The a16z report further points out that while some applications dominate the number of users, they are not necessarily leading in revenue generation. For example, video editing tools show different leaders in user count and revenue rankings. Some categories, including plant identification and nutritional applications, still perform well in revenue rankings despite the small overall users. The report clearly depicts the profound changes in the consumer AI field, with AI native applications replacing traditional models, and video generation and developer tools becoming new growth engines.
