Cohere today announced the launch of its latest AI platform "North", which aims to provide a secure workspace for enterprise users and directly challenge Microsoft's Copilot and Google's Vertex AI. Cohere claims that the new platform outperforms the two tech giants in multiple areas including finance, human resources, customer support and IT.
"North" combines large-scale language models, search capabilities and automation tools in a secure package, allowing enterprises to efficiently deploy AI technology while maintaining control of sensitive data. The platform supports private cloud environments or on-premises installations and is specifically designed for regulated industries such as finance and healthcare.
Cohere's internal testing showed that while Microsoft Copilot and Google Vertex AI performed well in automated tests, "North" consistently maintained consistent accuracy in human evaluations, while its competitors' performance dropped significantly. Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez said in an internal letter: "The artificial intelligence market is maturing and companies are beginning to realize the potential of this technology."
Royal Bank of Canada has partnered with Cohere to develop a dedicated version of "North" for financial institutions. This marks the first major use of the platform in the enterprise.
"North's" built-in search system, Compass, can handle a variety of data types, including images, presentations, spreadsheets, and documents, and supports multiple languages. Internal test results show that the time to complete tasks using this system is reduced by more than 80% compared to manual search.
Gomez pointed out that what enterprises need is not just a simply tuned consumer-grade AI chatbot, but a partner that can truly meet their needs. He said that Cohere "North" performed particularly well in financial and IT operations, compared with Microsoft Copilot's accuracy of only 29% in IT tasks.
As enterprise demand for AI technology continues to grow, the launch of Cohere "North" may change the way enterprises implement AI technology. Gomez emphasized that every company will become an AI company in the future and therefore needs fast, safe, and deployable solutions.
Currently, "North" is open to industries such as finance, medical, manufacturing, and critical infrastructure through early access programs, and Cohere hopes to reshape enterprise AI applications in terms of security and customization.
