​Microsoft AI head introduces three former top Google DeepMind scientists

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, Mustafa Suleyman, head of Microsoft's AI, recently poached three top scientists from Google DeepMind to enhance Microsoft's strength in the field of AI. The new members will join Microsoft's new office in Zurich, Switzerland, to help the company advance its technology.

Suleiman announced this week that he has successfully attracted former Google DeepMind scientists Marco Tagliasacchi, Zalán Borsos, and another research scientist, Ma, Matthias Minderer joins the team. The two former employees are the leading developers of the Audio Overviews tool, which is able to turn text into smooth podcasts. This feature was once part of NotebookLM, a Google AI research tool.

Taliasakhi and Bolsos are also involved in the Astra project at DeepMind, a trial of DeepMind in the field of smarter machine learning, which has the AI ​​agents that can use video, audio and Text answers user questions and can complete tasks independently. “Artificial intelligence remains a transformative force, and audio plays a key role in shaping more natural, intuitive and immersive interactions,” Taliasaki said on LinkedIn.

In addition to these two scientists, Suleiman also introduced Mindel, a former DeepMind research scientist with a PhD from Harvard University. He said on LinkedIn that he will focus on the research of visual abilities, which means he will be committed to improving machine learning's understanding of images and video.

The Financial Times reported that people close to the recruitment said the researchers played an important role in achieving Suleiman's goal of integrating AI agents into Microsoft's C opilot. "This is an excellent team that will be an important hub for MAI and grow rapidly with our offices in London," Suleiman said on LinkedIn.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time Suleiman has poached people from Google DeepMind. In December 2024, he also recruited Dominic King, former head of DeepMind's health division and Christopher Kelly, a clinical research scientist, to strengthen Microsoft's consumer AI health division.
