The OpenAI leadership team announced Friday at a Discord office hours meeting that the company plans to eventually integrate its AI video generation tool Sora directly into the popular ChatGPT application, further expanding its AI creation ecosystem.

Currently, Sora only provides services through a dedicated web application launched by OpenAI in December, where users can use the app to access the AI video model to generate movie clips that last up to 20 seconds. Rohan Sahai, Sora product head at OpenAI, said the company is actively studying how to introduce Sora to ChatGPT to combine the two products, but declined to disclose a specific timetable.

Sahai notes that the Sora version eventually launched in ChatGPT may not provide the same level of control functionality as standalone web applications, such as the ability to edit and splice videos. He explained that one of the reasons for launching Sora as a separate web application is to keep ChatGPT simple.

This move could be one of OpenAI's strategies to attract more users to ChatGPT, and it could also incentivize users to upgrade to ChatGPT's advanced subscription tiers, which may provide higher video generation restrictions.

In addition to ChatGPT integration, Sahai also revealed that the company is "happy to build" a standalone mobile app for Sora, and said the Sora team is actively recruiting mobile engineers. Meanwhile, OpenAI is developing an AI image generator powered by Sora technology, which may allow users to create more realistic photos than the current DALL-E3 model.

Since its launch, OpenAI has expanded Sora's web experience, providing users with more ways to browse community-generated videos. Sahai added that the company is also developing a new version of the Sora Turbo model, which currently supports Sora network applications.
