OpenAI supports Anthropic MCP standard, Agent SDK has added MCP support

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the company will support the Model Context Protocol (MCP) launched by competitor Anthropic, aiming to improve the accuracy and relevance of AI assistants in specific queries. Altman said OpenAI will integrate MCP into several of its products, including ChatGPT's desktop application.

MCP allows models to obtain information from various data sources, such as business tools, software, and content libraries, to better accomplish tasks. Developers can provide data through the "MCP Server" and build a "MCP Client" to connect to applications and workflows.

Since Anthropic opened source of MCP, several companies have added support for MCP on their platforms. Anthropic chief product officer Mike Krieger said MCP has become a thriving open standard with thousands of integrations. OpenAI said it will share more information about its MCP program in the coming months.
