Recently, Steve Sokolowski disclosed for the first time a lawsuit guided by OpenAI's o1pro artificial intelligence system, becoming the first such case in the U.S. federal court system. Steve and his brother Chris suffered an investment fraud in 2022 and lost 90% of their net worth, leaving them unable to pay the prosecution costs of up to US$800,000. To solve this problem, Steve decided to use artificial intelligence technology to advance the case. The brothers built a complete workflow, created an evidence database and wrote Python scripts to organize and analyze thousands of court records. o1pro helped them summarize the most important documents and evidence, laying the foundation for litigation.
During the writing process of the complaint, Steve used o1pro to conduct a series of mock court trials to test the possibilities of various motions to dismiss. During this process, they discovered that AI could not only quickly generate a motion to dismiss, but also simulate the judge's ruling, greatly improving the efficiency of case preparation. Ultimately, they came up with some effective litigation strategies, using AI to conduct probabilistic analysis to assess the odds of winning under different positions.
This case not only demonstrates the potential of AI in the legal field, but also highlights how ordinary people can use technological tools to fight back injustice when facing legal challenges. Steve said that although the outcome is not yet known, they are very optimistic about the prospects of the case, which fully reflects the civilian effect of artificial intelligence and brings new hope to those trapped in legal difficulties.
