Latest research shows that users who use ChatGPT frequently are more likely to feel lonely and become emotionally dependent on the tool, and also have fewer social relationships in real life. The study, jointly conducted by OpenAI and the MIT Media Lab, analyzed millions of interaction data and found that among heavy users, users who communicate emotionally have a stronger sense of loneliness. The study also shows that female users have decreased in socializing with others after using ChatGPT.

In the experiment, nearly 1,000 participants interacted with ChatGPT for at least five minutes a day, and the results showed a significant increase in loneliness and dependence on chatbots. Research points out that it is not clear whether using chatbots to aggravate loneliness or whether loneliness tends to seek emotional connections. Experts believe that AI chatbots may be "dangerous" and need further research on their social and emotional impacts.
