Against the backdrop of increasingly fierce competition in global artificial intelligence (AI), the South Korean government recently announced an important plan. Acting President Cui Xiangmu said that the government will purchase 10,000 high-performance GPUs as soon as possible through public-private cooperation to help the relevant services of the National AI Computing Center be launched as soon as possible. This move marks South Korea's ambitions in the field of AI, aiming to ensure its leading position in global competition.

According to Reuters, the South Korean government has not yet determined which brands or models of GPUs will be purchased. However, officials from the South Korean Ministry of Science and Technology Information and Communications revealed that details about the budget, GPU model and participating private enterprises are expected to be finalized by September this year. This large-scale procurement plan will provide strong computing power support for South Korea's future AI development.

Currently, the global GPU market is fiercely competitive, especially in the fields of generative AI and accelerated computing. Nvidia accounts for almost 80% of the market share, far ahead of its competitors such as Intel and AMD. As demand continues to rise, many countries and companies are seeking to build or upgrade their AI computing capabilities. This procurement plan in South Korea will make it more competitive in the research and development and application of AI technology.

In addition, OpenAI is also promoting its plan to reduce its dependence on Nvidia chips, and is accelerating the development of its own AI processing chips, which are expected to be completed and handed over to TSMC for production in the next few months.
