YouTube announced that it will add an artificial intelligence video generation function to help creators become more skillful when making short videos (Shorts). The update combines Google's Veo2 video model with YouTube's experimental Dream Screen feature, and users will be able to generate independent video clips that will be directly added to their short videos.
Since its launch in September 2023, the Dream Screen feature has the ability to generate pictures and videos based on text descriptions and can only be used as a virtual green screen background at first. Now, when using the feature, users simply turn on the Shorts camera, go to the Media Selector, and click on the Create option at the top to start generating the video. Users can describe what they want by entering text prompts and choose a variety of options such as video style, shots, movie effects and duration. This new video editing function simplifies the creative process and improves the creation experience of short videos.
YouTube said the new feature has been launched in countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and plans to expand to more regions in the future. However, this update is particularly novel for users because Google's latest Veo mode is still in its early access phase and is open to the public through a waiting list. Veo2's integration allows Dream Screen to generate videos faster and provide more detailed and realistic effects for real-world physical and human movements.
To ensure transparency of generated content, YouTube says the generated videos will have visual tags and Google's invisible SynthID watermark to identify that these videos were created or modified through artificial intelligence technology. Such measures help maintain the integrity of the creative content, and also allow users to have clearer directions and guarantees in the creative process.
